Manufacturing process :
A commercially available benzoic acid is created by partially oxidizing toluene with oxygen. This process uses manganese or cobalt naphthenates as catalysts. By combining hydrochloric acid with calcium benzoate, benzoic acid is formed. A significant amount of chlorinated benzoic acid derivatives is contained in the product.
