Introduction : Niacin (also known as vitamin B3) is one of the water-soluble B vitamins. Niacin is the generic name for nicotinic acid (pyridine-3-carboxylic acid), nicotinamide (niacinamide or pyridine-3-carboxamide), and related derivatives, such as nicotinamide riboside.
Metabolism : Ingested niacin is absorbed primarily in the small intestine, but some is absorbed in the stomach. Even when taken in very high doses of 3 to 4 g, niacin is almost completely absorbed. Once absorbed, physiologic amounts of niacin are metabolized to NAD.
Description : Niacin is a B vitamin that is made and used by your body to turn food into energy. It helps keep your nervous system, digestive system and skin healthy. Niacin (vitamin B-3) is often part of a daily multivitamin, but most people get enough niacin from the food they eat.
Precautions : you should know that niacin causes flushing (redness, warmth, itching, tingling) of the face, neck, chest, or back. This side effect usually goes away after taking the medicine for several weeks. Avoid drinking alcohol or hot drinks or eating spicy foods around the time you take niacin.
Warning : If you have diabetes, niacin can interfere with blood glucose control. Use niacin with caution if you have the complex form of arthritis gout. Niacin can cause an excess of uric acid in the blood (hyperuricemia), putting you at risk of gout. If you are pregnant, do not take prescription niacin for high cholesterol.
Side Effects : Side effects may include diarrhea, headache, stomach discomfort, and bloating. High doses (50 mg or more) of niacin can cause side effects. The most common side effect is called niacin flush, which is a burning, tingling sensation in the face and chest, and red or flushed skin.
