It is an oral steroidal aromatase inhibitor used in the adjuvant treatment of hormonally-responsive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. How does it work?

This drug belongs to the hemorrhagic agent class. It facilitates the easy flow of blood through narrowed arteries. It allows the blood to deliver more oxygen to the muscles (such as during exercise) which increases walking distance and duration.

Using this medication, you can improve the symptoms of intermittent claudication caused by occlusive arterial disease in the legs or arms. Pentoxifylline lessens muscle aching/pain/cramps associated with intermittent claudication, including walking.

How to use:

The tablet should be swallowed whole. Avoid crushing, breaking, or chewing it before swallowing. Taking Pentoxifylline with meals will decrease the chance of stomach upset. You can also take an antacid with the medicine.

Dosage of usage:

Take 400 mg orally three times a day. In the event of adverse effects, reduce the dosage to 400 mg twice a day.

Side effects:

If you experience any of these symptoms of an allergic reaction, you should stop taking pentoxifylline and get emergency medical help. These include hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat and trouble breathing. 

Call your doctor at once if you have:

• Chest pain
• Pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest
• Red/pink urine
• Light-headed feeling
• Signs of stomach bleeding--bloody or tarry stools
• coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds

Common side effects may include:

• Dizziness
• Headache
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Gas
• Bloating
• Upset stomach

Warnings and precautions while using this product:

There should be no use of pentoxifylline if you have recently experienced any type of bleeding in your brain or retina.
