The medication piroxicam is a type of NSAID. The medication prevents the body from making a substance that causes pain, fever, and inflammation.

Piroxicam is used to relieve pain, tenderness, swelling, and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis (degenerative arthritis that causes breakdown of the joint lining) and rheumatoid arthritis (swelling of the joint lining). Piroxicam belongs to the NSAID family of medications.

How to use:

Piroxicam is available in the form of a capsule. One or two capsules should be taken per day. The same time(s) every day is best for taking piroxicam. Make sure you understand all instructions on your prescription label. Consult your doctor if you have any questions.

Dosage of usage:

• Adult dosage (ages 18 years and older)
• The typical daily dose is 20 mg. This can be divided into two doses of 10 mg each.
• Child dosage (ages 0-17 years)

Alcohol interactions warning

The combination of piroxicam and alcohol increases the risk of stomach ulcers and bleeding.

Warnings for people with certain health conditions

For people with asthma: Piroxicam can trigger asthma attacks. If you have asthma that is triggered by aspirin, don't take piroxicam. Both can trigger asthma symptoms.

For people with stomach ulcers or bleeding: You are more likely to experience bleeding, ulcers, and tears (perforations) in your esophagus, stomach, and intestines when taking this medicine. Be on the lookout for symptoms of ulcers or stomach or intestinal bleeding when taking piroxicam. Bloody stools, stomach pain, and vomiting are all symptoms. Smokers, those who use alcohol, and those over 65 are at higher risk. Smoking and taking piroxicam with certain other medications also increase your risk of bleeding.

For people with kidney disease: It is possible to damage your kidneys if you use Piroxicam for a long time. People with serious kidney disease should not take this medication.

For people with high blood pressure: High blood pressure can be caused by piroxicam or made worse by piroxicam. If you are taking piroxicam, you may have to check your blood pressure often.
