How does it work:

Since decades, probenecid has been used to treat gout. The drug inhibits a renal tubular transporter, which facilitates excretion of the disease-causing uric acid by blocking reuptake.

The uricosuric drug, probenecid, inhibits the tubular reabsorption of filtered and secreted uric acid, increasing its excretion.

Applications Or where it is used:

Probenecid is prescribed to treat chronic gout and gouty arthritis. The medication prevents gout attacks, not treats them. It works by removing uric acid from the body through the kidneys.

Manufacturing process:

It consists of the following steps: heating a water bath to 75-80C to completely dissolve probenecid in ethyl alcohol; dropping a solution of sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, or absolute ethyl alcohol, dissolved in advance at 70 degrees Celsius.

How to use:

It is recommended that you take this medication twice daily by mouth with food or antacids to relieve stomach upset or as your doctor directs. While taking this drug, it is best to drink a full glass of water with each dose and at least eight more glasses (8 ounces each) each day to prevent kidney stones. Consult your doctor if you are on a restricted fluid intake. Your dose will depend on your condition and response to therapy. In cases of sudden/severe gout attacks, probenecid should not be started. Instead, wait until the current attack ends before starting it. As your body removes extra uric acid, you may experience an increase in gout attacks during the next few months. While taking probenecid, continue taking your gout pain medications along with it.

The majority of people using this medication have no serious side effects. You should contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these unlikely but serious side effects: lower back pain, difficult/painful urination, or a change in urine amount or color.
